Top Ten New-to-Me Authors that have Become Favorites

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme posted by The Broke and the Bookish where participators can enjoy a different prompt every Tuesday.

toptentuesday2

Love this week’s prompt! Sometimes Top Ten Tuesday get’s a little hardcore for me, like “Top Ten Authors you’ve read multiple books of” (in which case, I could probably name only three) or “Top Ten books you read this month” and I’m like “with my life, I’d be lucky if I got through ONE! But this week is actually something I can come up with plenty for! Not quite ten… but enough.

1) Marie Rutkoski

16069030

I absolutely adored The Winner’s Curse. I loved how it was so full of the questions of human nature and brilliant characters. I haven’t read the second in series yet, but I’m definitely looking forward to it!

When a Book Suddenly Changes Genres

So this has happened to me before. I’m enjoying a book, reading along, and then BAM! Genre change! Everything stops making sense.

hana- Book- Talk

I think authors do this to add a certain shock value, but I’m honestly not sure how to feel about it. It’s like with every book, I have a certain comfort zone that’s created by my expectations of what that book is, and when it changes so drastically like this, the entire book become unbelievable. Let me give an example.

Thicker Than Water

304111

I read this book several years ago. (And it was freakishly hard to find on goodreads for this post. Do you have any idea how many books are titled “Thicker than Water?”) WARNING: Complete spoilers ahead.

It’s basically about a girl who- to escape the troubles of her teen life- goes to nightclubs where she discovers vampires doing weird vampire things. She spends the entire book trying to blend in with the vampires and get evidence about who they are, until at the end she approaches one to ask him to change her into a vampire. Except surprise! He isn’t a vampire. In fact, no one is. Vampires don’t exist. Weirdos that go drinking other people’s blood in nightclubs, however, do exist. The whole thing left a bitter taste in my mouth.

This happens with videogames, too.

Siren

Siren_art_box

This was my very first horror game when I was a kid. That was okay, though, because it was a zombie game, and I wasn’t afraid of zombies. Except, halfway through I find out it’s not a zombie game. It’s an alien game! And I was terrified of aliens! The first level that the zombies started to get weird alien mutations I was playing with my sister and I was so badly scared and surprised that I cried. Except we’d gotten so far and I didn’t want to re-do all the progress we’d made, so I played with my eyes half closed until the aliens came on and then it was my sister’s turn. We never did win that game. No way I’m going back to it, though. Pff. Aliens.

This even happens with movies!

The Village

51DS3WMWZQL

Is anyone surprised that the genre-swapping movie in question was written by M. Night Shadymellon? Spoilers ahead! (Kinda)

People live in an old-timey witchcrafty village, kept inside by fear of monsters. One lady strays out of the village at the very end and the audience finds out that it’s not, in fact, set in old times, it’s in the 21st century.. and no one ever noticed this village-trapped-in-time because they were in a nature preserve.. And I guess no one ever goes to those.

So, overall, I think this genre-change deal exists to create a major shock value in the reader/player/watcher, but in the end, all it does for me is make the entire thing seem pointless and unbelievable. Except for in the case of Siren, in which it just made the whole thing f&^*ing terrifying.

Have you ever come across a piece of media like this? What do you think when something suddenly changes genres? Do you like the shock, or does it ruin the whole thing? I’m interested to know your thoughts!

Top Ten 2016 Debuts I’m Looking Forward To

This is my second Top Ten Tuesday in two weeks! I don’t think that’s ever happened before. Man, am I on the ball today (toweeks?). In case you’re unawares, Top Ten Tuesday is a meme run by The Broke and the Bookish that gives prompts like this one every Tuesday. If you haven’t already, they’re worth checking out!

toptentuesday2

I’m actually not aware of many debuts, so this topic for me is going to be incredibly skimpy. But there is one I’m really looking forward to!

1) Emotive by Kevin Laymon

Black dachshund on dark background

Emotive is a tale of life, love, compassion, and the pursuit of happiness as told through the eyes of the story’s narrator Linus. Linus is a puppy living in a small city located in the rolling hillsides of upstate New York. When the abnormalities of his owner Sam are all he knows since birth, he gains a perspective of unyielding acceptance and love towards the man who feeds him, takes him to the park, and murders women in his basement.

I absolutely love the sound of that synopsis. This one’s set to be out in April of next year, and it can’t come soon enough! It seems like it’s going to be dark, but how can it be when it’s narrated by a dog? Definitely looking forward to seeing how it goes.

2) This is Where it Ends by Marieke Nijkamp

2582334410:00 a.m.

The principal of Opportunity, Alabama’s high school finishes her speech, welcoming the entire student body to a new semester and encouraging them to excel and achieve.

10:02 a.m.
The students get up to leave the auditorium for their next class.

10:03
The auditorium doors won’t open.

10:05
Someone starts shooting.

Told over the span of 54 harrowing minutes from four different perspectives, terror reigns as one student’s calculated revenge turns into the ultimate game of survival.

This one’s been on my TBR for months- I added it based on a review from another blogger that loved it. Looking forward to reading something so time-sensitive, because I think all of the books I generally read are a little too traditionally written.

3) How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather

Math_9780553539479_jkt_all_r1.inddSalem, Massachusetts is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for thosetrials and immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves The Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were?

If dealing with that weren’t enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real live (well technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries old curse affecting anyone with ties to the trials.

Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with the Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it’s Salem. But history is about to repeat itself.

This synopsis brought up some lost feelings of the kinds of books I used to read, and I’d really love to explore them. My hope is that it feels something like The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong, which felt like starting a new life to me. Probably the most re-read book I own. This is disappointing, because I had a chance to meet Kelley Armstrong and I could not for the life of me find my copy of The Summoning! I was going to buy a new one then and there just to have her autograph on it, but she wasn’t selling any copies. Woe is me.

4) These Vicious Masks by Kelly Zekas

23688792England, 1882. Evelyn is bored with society and its expectations. So when her beloved sister, Rose, mysteriously vanishes, she ignores her parents and travels to London to find her, accompanied by the dashing Mr. Kent. But they’re not the only ones looking for Rose. The reclusive, young gentleman Sebastian Braddock is also searching for her, claiming that both sisters have special healing powers. Evelyn is convinced that Sebastian must be mad, until she discovers that his strange tales of extraordinary people are true—and that her sister is in graver danger than she feared.

Is it me, or are all the books I’m looking forward to next year incredibly dark? Talk about holiday spirit.

So that’s it for my top ten-uh.. four. I’d love to see what everyone else is looking forward to! Happy Tuesday!

Who Had The Saddest Book Death?

Who Had The Saddest Book Death?

hana- Book- Talk

So this topic was triggered- surprisingly- by fanfiction. I don’t go out of my way to read fanfiction, but I follow a Harry Potter page on facebook that will occasionally post it. In this fanfic, Ron was getting married to Herminoe and George turned to Fred to make some joking comment about Ron. Except, Fred wasn’t there. Because he’s dead. That thought kind of hit me hard. I mean, yes, it’s hard to lose a partner, yes it’s hard to lose a friend or a mother or a father but a twin? Someone who’s been with you literally from the moment you were born? The two of them were inseparable, and I got significantly sad thinking about it. Like, five years later. I haven’t read Harry Potter since I was in High School, and it’s still making me sad. So that’s something.

But I have honorable mentions!

1) Lennie in Of Mice and Men

890

This is number one on the list for a reason: it was the first book to ever make me cry. I read it back in High School, and although I was an avid reader even at that time, I never imagined words on paper would be able to bring tears to my eyes. It was miserably sad, mainly because Lennie was so innocent and George was so tormented. I spent weeks after reading the end imagining that it had ended differently, and how it could have been.

3) The Mother in A Monster Calls

8621462

Oh God.. Just.. Oh God.. Read this book.

3) Augustus in The Fault in Our Stars

11870085

Did anyone doubt this would be in here? Another book that made me cry actual tears. (I have a list for those now on Goodreads.) But Augustus’s death wasn’t actually the saddest part for me- it was his pre-funeral. Something about it had me so sad that when I got to the actual death, I was already numb.

So what about you? What were the saddest book deaths in your opinion? Were there any books that made you cry? I want to know!

Top Ten Things I’m Thankful for that Aren’t Books

What? This week’s meme isn’t about books at all? I took a break at a strange time. But it’s still a great prompt!

toptentuesday2

Top Ten Things I’m Thankful for that Aren’t Books:

  1) I’m thankful for my in-laws.

Weird, right? Especially being the first thing on the list. But I actually absolutely adore my in-laws. They have taught me so much about life, my fiance, and even myself that I honestly don’t know who I’d be without them and my man.

2) I’m thankful for God.

I have so many blessings in my life, and I’m sure there are so many of them that aren’t a coincidence. Maybe even all of them. I have problems in my life, as everyone does, but I go through life with a strong feeling that everything’s going to be okay, and I credit that to my faith.

Faith has also helped me through so much in my life, and I was astonished to find that there were so many answers in the bible that I had no idea about. Like, I thought the bible pretty much said “Love each other and love God,” but it’s actually helped with things as obscure as sleep issues and losing my car.

3) I’m thankful for my job.

Don’t get me wrong- I absolutely hate my job. Like, with a burning passion. In fact, about 80% of my problems can be blamed on my job. But if it wasn’t for that job, I wouldn’t be able to pay the bills, so thank you, job. Even though you suck.

  4) I’m thankful for blogging.

Who doing this list isn’t? But I can’t say reading so I’ll just mention the second-best fulfilling time-waster I know. I’m also thankful for comments!

  5) I’m thankful for the comfort of my life.

There are so many people out there that don’t have even the simplest of comforts that I do, like a bed to sleep in and a working laundry machine. When I look at things that way, it’s pretty easy to be thankful for everything.

I know it’s only five, but I think “everything” pretty much summed the rest up! So what are you thankful for? Leave a comment and I’ll visit back!

Finally Back!

I’m a little scared, actually. I mean, blogging takes up a lot of time and am I ready to commit to this? But it’s been far too long and life is getting a little less crazy, so I’m going to finally announce my re-arrival, fixed with all sorts of excuses reasons for my absence.

1) I have a niece now!

11855915_10200691507365852_8793189701136050460_n

Evelyn Grace was born three months ago and is my very first niece. I don’t have any nephews, either, so other than a cousin that was born when I was ten, she’s the first in-family baby we’ve had for a loooong time! I’m so thrilled for my sister (in-law-to-be, but who cares about that?) who’s turning out to be an amazing mother! This tiny girl has been anything but a little angel, though; she’s been running her mother and grams ragged with a series of medical problems. I help where I can, so I’m other there pretty much any spare moment I can get. But who wouldn’t be, with that sweet face?

12226951_10200917906865698_3222668802170877235_n

2) I’m changing careers!

You know, if you can call what I currently do (overnight stocking) a career. My job pays the bills and I appreciate that, but now I’m looking for something a little more… me. Namely, nannying! I’m don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, but I want to be a housewife when I have my own kids, but seeing as I don’t, I’m looking to be a housemaid for someone else and THEIR kids! I live next to a military base in Alabama, so I’m hoping it won’t be too difficult for me to find, but I’m doing this at an awkward time- after the start of school. Still, I’d rather have a family that needs me year-round than one that will drop me once school starts again, so everything is a little blessing.

3) I’m getting married!

Wait what? Married? Yes, you heard that right! Married! My boyfriend of five years has finally noticed all of the various hints I’ve been dropping and has popped the question! It was a very romantic proposal including a meaningful location, a delicious dinner, a surprise outing, and an unexpected ‘pop!’ Honestly, I think he caught the baby bug from his niece because he’s been alluding to kids since her birth. Joy for me!

Enlarged

So overall, my life is full of a lot blessings- even if they’re busy blessings! I’m just now starting to get back into the normal feel of things, though, so soon I’ll be coming back atcha with book reviews and – something I’ve never really done but always planned to do and now once again plan to do – bookish topics! Because I love bookish conversations. It also means I don’t need to read as quickly! (Because really who has time for that.)

So how’s everyone doing? Any big news while I’ve been gone? Looking forward to getting back with everyone!

…Or Not!

Okay, so this hiatus is going to be a little longer than anticipated. Sorry I said I’d be back on the 26th and then just never appeared! Right now life is getting a little hectic, and I need the spare time to work things out. I’ll still be back- someday! In the meantime, I’ll still be reading blog posts and commenting on blogs, but Danni Mae is shirking for the timebeing. Enjoy yourselves and I’ll hopefully see you soon!

Taking a Short Break!

I’m on Hiatus!

Enjoyment - free happy woman enjoying sunset. Beautiful woman in a white dress embracing the golden sunshine glow of sunset with her arms outspread and face raised to the sky enjoying peace and serenity of nature

On the 16th, I’ll be going on vacation to my beautiful former home of New York to see my family! I’ll be back around the 26th, and continue blogging and commenting at that time, as well as probably give a detailed description of my vacation! Currently, I’m looking very much forward to eating all of my hometown’s food. I think I’ll take a picture of everything I eat because I’m that much of a food nostalgic. Until then, ta!

Note: Yes, this picture is re-used from my Girl with All the Gifts post, but I think the picture is accurate to the way I feel about taking a whole ten days off of work.

Everyone in this book is on Drugs. Review: The Consequence of Loving Colton by Rachel Van Dyken

23381448My name is Milo Caro and I have a confession to make.

I’ve been in love with Colton Mathews since I was five. He should have known that sharing a cookie with a sugar obsessed little monster would do the trick–it sealed his fate. So really, the fact that he’s sporting a black eye, a limp, almost got ran over by a car, and was nearly responsible for another person’s death? Right. HIs fault. Not mine.

I made a pact with myself–this weekend would be different. I’d come home for my brothers wedding, smile, and Colton would naturally melt into my arms, we’d get married have five kids, live in a house by the river, and get a dog named scratch (clearly I’ve thought this through).

What really happened? I punched my brother in the face, Colton kissed me and apologized, I lied about having a boyfriend, oh and everyone wants to meet the mystery man.

They say laughter always comes before insanity–ha, ha. All I wanted was my brother’s best friend…instead I’m sitting in prison.

Let this be a lesson to you all…life rarely happens the way you want it to.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Armchair Bea Topic Day Two: Visual Expressions!

Danni Mae Armchair BEA

Yes, this picture WILL be on every one of my BEA posts- I just learned how to do it and I’m very proud.

And we’re on at BEA Day Two! I’m a little late in the game (it’s already noon!) But I had a little trouble coming up with my spine poem. Finally, I decided on this:

SDC11913

Wintergirls Speak Easy of their Fatally Flaky Fragile Spirits but Unwind the Sharp Objects of their Cold Kiss and you’ll find their True Colors are Poison.

Not fluent in and of itself, but I couldn’t make anything without adding a few “if, ands,” or “buts.”

If that’s too wordy for you, I have a shorter and far more accurate poem…

SDC11934

The Truth about Forever: There’s Cake in my Future.

And there is. There literally is.

Anywho, it’s time to get on to the juice of BEA today: Today’s topic!
