Kindle Kandy Week One!

Kindle Kandy Pinking

Kindle Kandy is a meme hosted by The Book Dame dedicated to discovering all of those books on your shelf that you forgot you had. First reading the idea, I thought “Pfft. That’s for advanced readers and big-time bloggers. There’s no way I’d have a book that I haven’t read unless it was a DNF.” That’s when I remembered that not only have I gone on book-buying binges unlike anything of my younger days, I’ve been to a convention where I bought a ton of books and also got a ton of free books as a result of friends moving or cleaning out their shelves. So yes, I DO have unread books.

Here’s just a few:

River Road by Suzanne Johnson

13539162 Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.

Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.

I bought this one at a convention, having recognized the author’s name yet having read nothing from her. I even got my copy signed! I started reading it but didn’t love it- I still intend to give it another try, if only because it’s signed and I WANT to love it. Who doesn’t want a signed copy of a book they love?

Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce

6357708Rosie March once felt her bond with her sister was unbreakable. Owing Scarlett her life, Rosie hunts ferociously alongside her. But even as more girls’ bodies pile up in the city and the Fenris seem to be gaining power, Rosie dreams of a life beyond the wolves. She finds herself drawn to Silas, a young woodsman who is deadly with an ax and Scarlett’s only friend–but does loving him mean betraying her sister and all that they’ve worked for?

This was a cleanout- a friend making space. I fully intend to read it still. Someday. When I have time. (That being said, I may never get to it. But as long as I intend to, right?)

The Wisdom of Hair by Kim Boykin

19251795“The problem with cutting your own hair is that once you start, you just keep cutting, trying to fix it, and the truth is, some things can never be fixed. The day of my daddy’s funeral, I cut my bangs until they were the length of those little paintbrushes that come with dime-store watercolor sets. I was nine years old. People asked me why I did it, but I was too young then to know I was changing my hair because I wanted to change my life.”

In 1983, on her nineteenth birthday, Zora Adams finally says goodbye to her alcoholic mother and their tiny town in the mountains of South Carolina. Living with a woman who dresses like Judy Garland and brings home a different man each night is not a pretty existence, and Zora is ready for life to be beautiful.

With the help of a beloved teacher, she moves to a coastal town and enrolls in the Davenport School of Beauty. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Cathcart, she learns the art of fixing hair, and becomes fast friends with the lively Sara Jane Farquhar, a natural hair stylist. She also falls hard for handsome young widower Winston Sawyer, who is drowning his grief in bourbon. She couldn’t save Mama, but maybe she can save him.

This was purchased on a splurge day! Loved the title, loved the cover- who cares about the synopsis with this killer combination? Again, something I will supposedly definitely get to, eventually.

So what’s on your shelf? Be sure to check out The Book Dame for more Kindle Kandy!

  1. Wow, Danni, you should read these! Sisters Red was a good retelling and River Road is a book that I haven’t seen for awhile, but have always wanted to read. I love the blurb for The Wisdom of hair. The excerpt shows the voice of the character in just a couple of seconds.
I actually got one book read from my Kindle Kandy list this week! 🙂 I added three more at the same time, but who’s counting? Well…at least I will never run out meme material.
    Thanks for participating!

    • Haha, I’d say they’re next on the list but I have two NetGalley reviews, one DNF on loan that I want to finish after my current read, and one prequel to a book I said I’d review before I found out it was a sequel. Also Ava Lavender, which I dumbly said was next in line about three books back. But they’re DEFINITELY *Ahem* next in line after that!
