Before the nightmare, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary life. But when splintering, blood-soaked images start haunting her thoughts, Yeong-hye decides to purge her mind and renounce eating meat. In a country where societal mores are strictly obeyed, Yeong-hye’s decision to embrace a more “plant-like” existence is a shocking act of subversion. And as her passive rebellion manifests in ever more extreme and frightening forms, scandal, abuse, and estrangement begin to send Yeong-hye spiraling deep into the spaces of her fantasy. In a complete metamorphosis of both mind and body, her now dangerous endeavor will take Yeong-hye—impossibly, ecstatically, tragically—far from her once-known self altogether.
A disturbing, yet beautifully composed narrative told in three parts, The Vegetarian is an allegorical novel about modern day South Korea, but also a story of obsession, choice, and our faltering attempts to understand others, from one imprisoned body to another.

Super Short Synopsis:
A very plain woman refuses to eat meat. Then she goes crazy. Then everyone else goes crazy.
My Thoughts:
I think The Vegetarian was a really hit-or-miss book, and it was a bit of a miss for me. I enjoyed the language and the story, but there were a ton of things in the plot I just didn’t get, the biggest of those being the symbolism of the plant references. I can feel that there’s deep meaning there, but I just couldn’t figure it out, which was a tad frustrating because I feel as though it could have been fantastic for me if I’d just understood it.
Something I really enjoyed about The Vegetarian was having a glimpse into a different culture. The book is translated into English, so you can really get an authentic look into South Korean culture from it. But sometimes this also aided in my missing the meaning, because there were points where the characters responded to events in really odd ways, and I wasn’t sure if that was part of the culture or just everyone going crazy. Or just those characters’ personalities. Makes me feel a little dumb, honestly.
Overall, The Vegetarian was definitely an enjoyable story, but I feel as though I sort of missed something big, especially with the ending. It’s a shame because I feel as though I could have really liked it.

This was recently discussed in my local newspaper. Honestly, I’m on the fence… should I read it or should I leave it? XD

I think you personally might actually like it. It has a lot of strange but mystical moments in it, and I think it’s something you might enjoy. I forgot to put this in the review, but there’s a bit of violence and sex in it, so I hope you’re comfortable with that.
If you do end up reading it, like it or not, tell me what you think!

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear this was sort of a miss for you. I heard about it around Instagram so I requested it on Netgalley. I haven’t had a chance to start reading it yet (though I think it’ll be archived soon) but I’m interested in seeing how the perspectives between the different characters will be executed (I believe there’s three, right?). Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts!

Yeah, there’s three characters and you get a few tidbits of one more. The first character was my favorite, so I was kind of reading the second to get back to the first, but then I realized his story was over. I hope you enjoy it, though!

Hmm, this one does sound odd and interesting, but it does sound like a hit or miss book. Sorry you weren’t able to enjoy it as much as you would have liked to. I imagine I’d probably have the same difficulties. But it does sound really interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it in my library.
Thanks for reviewing it!

Is it bad that I would buy this book just looking at the cover? It’s so simplistic but I absolutely love it.

Not at all! The cover is what inspires me to buy plenty of books. The title is what got me on this one.
