Review: The Girl with All the Gifts (Could we be ANY more misleading?)

19418277

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her “our little genius.”

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

My Thoughts:

So we’ve all (probably) seen The Girl with all the Gifts floating around the blogosphere. The reviews on it are astronomical; everyone loves it! Everyone thinks it’s amazing! I’m wondering if I’m the only one that got it completely wrong. I’m not saying I didn’t like it. It was a good book- very philosophical, plenty interesting- but it just wasn’t at all what I was expecting.

Do you know anything about what this book really is? No? Then read that synopsis again. What kind of book do you think this is? Everything from the title to the synopsis to the cover to the reviews on the cover (like “heartfelt… painfully human” and “Tense and fast-paced with a heartwarming tenderness”) had me expecting and wanting this:

Enjoyment - free happy woman enjoying sunset. Beautiful woman in a white dress embracing the golden sunshine glow of sunset with her arms outspread and face raised to the sky enjoying peace and serenity of nature

Synopsis: Due to her devastatingly powerful gift, Melanie is kept in a prison under lock and key until the fateful day that she escapes. Together with her new friends, she is ready to use her powers to teach the world about trust, friendship and love! (This picture even looks similar to the cover. How could you NOT expect this?)

What it actually was, though…

Girlwithallthegiftsdeath

Synopsis: Due to her devastatingly powerful gift, Melanie is kept in a prison under lock and key until the fateful day that she escapes. Together with her new friends, she is ready to use her powers to teach the world about trust, friendship and love! try not to kill anyone. Because she’s a zombie.

No seriously. The Girl with All the Gifts is a zombie book! Did anyone else see this coming? Also, that picture is from The Last of Us, an amazingly written game that deals with the exact same type of zombie as The Girl with All the Gifts. Fungi-style. In concept, a pretty neat idea. But not what I wanted or was expecting. It was better as a game.

Other than the fact that TGWATG was NOT in fact an uplifting, motivational novel with a happy ending, it wasn’t horrible. The characters were all thoroughly thought out and all had very unique viewpoints, to the point where I knew who was talking easily without them being addressed regardless of there being five different views. But it wasn’t for me. My whole reading experience was just practically waiting for the chapter to be over so I could get to Melanie’s viewpoint, and occasionally the Dr’s.

Overall.. it wasn’t bad. It just wasn’t what I wanted. I was looking for beautiful, uplifting, inspiring, and I got dark, gloomy, death-to-humanity-feeling. There were a lot of good questions raised, and I think an educated person knowing what they’re in for would really enjoy it. It was well written and must have been thoroughly thought out and edited. And I firmly believe that it deserves all the good reviews its gotten because it is a good book. It just wasn’t for me.

  1. This is a favorite of mine. I loved the surprise, but I can understand your situation. I’ve fine this myself a time or two. I’m sorry it was the wrong time for you and appreciate your very fair review.

    • Haha, I’m glad you think they’re fair. I don’t want to deter anyone from reading it because it WAS good… just not for me. I’ve already recommended it to a couple of blogger friends.

  2. I love your review! I really dislike it when a book doesn’t turn out to be what I expected too haha. I think that’s something I REALLY need to work on 😀

    • I just wanted something heartwarming and life changing is all! And I got.. zombies. I don’t have anything against zombies, but if my life is going to be changed, I’d prefer it was by something more.. alive.

      • I was supposed to buy this as a gift for my dad a few weeks ago, and I’m glad I didn’t. I’m not exactly sure if he enjoys zombie books lol

    • Yes.. a little disappointing. I’m wondering if I knew it was a zombie book, would I read it when I was in the mood for that sort of thing and absolutely love it? I think so. I guess in that way my review is unfair, but can just say I review all aspects of the books, marketing included.

      • I’m not really into zombie books actually. And it seems pretty misleading if that’s the case. But I did hear about Warm Bodies! Have you read that? They say it’s good and there is also a movie adaptation of it! 🙂

      • I’ve seen the movie adaption in stores but I didn’t know it was a book, too! I guess we’re just gunna come up with all sorts of monsters to be love interests now. Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies.. what’s next, mummies?

  3. Wow, I would have NEVER expected this to be a zombie book! Holy crap! Great review and thank you for shedding some light on this! How could all the reviews I’ve read NOT mention this?! xoxo

    • Haha, what, really? NO ONE wants to tell anyone it’s a zombie book? I guess you’re right, though, because I’ve read reviews on it, too (that’s one of the reasons I picked it up at all) and I certainly wasn’t expecting it. I wonder if I was the only one completely thrown off by this.

    • Thanks! I have read one zombie book before this; The Forest of Bones and Teeth (or something like that) that I picked up based on the title. LOVED all the zombie parts in it, but still hated the book because the MC was an idiot that prioritized hopeless love over the zombies trying to kill everyone. So I CAN like them.. but this one.. maybe just completely the wrong time. I’m strongly betting that you’ll love it, though.
